Welcome to Fickes Glass Act Because Life Isn’t Just Black and White

Recently restored this Tiffany ceiling lamp for a customer. Design was not soldered together, but rather the glass ‘floated’ in channels and held in place with metal tabs. Wiring and all electrical was very old and defective and had to be replaced. One piece of red glass was missing and I was able to match close to the color required. I’ve found that this is probably one of the biggest problem in repairing older stained glass works. Top metal cowling had separated from the lamp body in several places. I resoldered the entire top cowling and several tabs that were loose. Also applied brass patina to the solder to match the rest of the lamp. Disassembled for ease of repair, soldered cleaned and replaced the missing glass piece. Beautiful lamp. It was approximately 80 years old. Not a lot of glass work, but I was glad I was able to restore to it to near it’s original glory. Customer was happy with the result.

Several years ago I acquired some stained glass pieces that were literally in pieces with years of accumulated dirt and grime. The man I received them from couldn’t bring himself to put it in the trash, so I took it off his hands. Unfortunately I had to discard most if it. Just wasn’t worth the effort to disassemble and clean. Had one item that intrigued me and I promised myself to re-purpose it. It was a column box with a stained glass design in it. It was approx. 6 ft tall and 9 inches wide. I shorten it to approx. 4 1/2 ft tall due to some damage to the wood. The glass itself had many broken pieces and I was only able to salvage only 25-30% of that. Added additional glass and created a sunset river scene. When the glass panel was done, I refinished the existing box and realized that I could insert a clock mechanism into the top face. I added LED strip lights inside that can be dimmed for backlighting. Not thrilled with the finished project, but satisfied that I was finally able to re-purpose it and add a useful and decorative item to our family room.

I continue to enjoy creating stain glass works in my retirement for friends and customers on a commission basis. There are few things that are hand crafted any more and doing stained glass allows me to keep the art alive while being able to express my artistic side. However, attending craft shows, showing my stained glass products, is no longer a worthwhile endeavor for me. Too much work and time and essentially a financial loss! However, I am always open to doing commission pieces made to your specifications and budget.

Recenty completed this Sunflower Suncatcher for a client in Montana as a gift for a dear friend. Similiar to a much larger panel I had completed many years ago.

Dual Sunflower Suncatcher

One of my most requested suncatcher items is a pet paw, created in memory of a lost cat or dog that has “crossed over the rainbow bridge”. These are customized with the pet’s name and glass is chosen that closely resembles their fur.

Two Dog Paws Suncatcher Commissioned $12 each

Pumpkin Fest 10/08 and 10/09/2016 was fairly successful. Saturday’s rain surprisingly did not keep many people from coming out. Other than the occasional rain, the weather was good. However, the overnight winds on Saturday night cause some damage to our canopy, bringing cooler temperatures and unending it into the walkway and damaging about 15 small items that need repaired or tossed. Sunday was eventually warm, but the wind would not cease and was very gusty all day. Not fun. Also, I think I am reaching the point where these craft shows are not worth the wear and tear on this old body, so I will be doing some serious soul searching for next year’s events!

Admittedly I have been very lax in attending to business lately, updating Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/FickesGlassAct/), this website and even attending shows. Having 2 new grandkids this past year has taken up a lot of our time. That being said, our next show will be 10/8 and 10/09/2016 at the Pennsboro Pumpkin Fest (https://www.facebook.com/events/249087725450443/) or http://www.pennsboropumpkinfest.com/. We always enjoy this show. There are many vendors and there is something for everyone. Hope to see a lot of old and new customers and friends there. Mark your calendars now!
